The Sear Burr

I've often shot at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, and in fact, have had some of my better performances while shooting with the Marines. This particular day I was still active on the Air Force Team and shooting along with some of my teammates. For my first Slow Fire target I had noticed I had a "catch" just before the end of travel in my trigger on my 1911. I mentioned it to one of my teammates as we came back from scoring and said I was going to have to do something about it. But, what to do? We moved right into the second string of Slow Fire and I expected we would continue to move along through the entire match.

Well, luck was with me that day! As we came back from scoring the second Slow Fire, it was announced that a Slow Fire refire would occur prior to the next match. I thought, "Great - a chance to fix my trigger." I stripped the rear out of the gun and took a close look and feel of my sear. Yep, there was a slight burr on the trailing edge. But, it was nothing my Leatherman couldn't take care of, so I went to work smoothing it.

My teammate approached and asked what I was doing and I replied that I was fixing the "catch" I had told him about. He looked a bit questioningly and said, "I thought you meant you were going to take it over to the Marine armorers."

Nope, I didn't take it anywhere. And, yup, it worked fine when I put it back in before the refire had completed. I even shot a good score for that overall match. I always have done well at MCB Quantico. -Edwin C. Hall
