Recomended Primer?
« on: June 23, 2008, 10:40:05 am »
Hi All,

My first post on the site!

Anyone have any recommendations on what is the best primer manufacturer/type to use with the star progressive?

Or for that matter, which ones feed poorly?

Thanks,

-steve

I have used both small and large Winchester and Federal.
No experience with any others.
Loaded well in excess of 100,000 rounds, could be 250K  (45, 38, 9mm)
I have not had a problem with either one, as long as machine is clean around the area, especially of powder residue.

I too use Winchester and Federal and have not had any problems with either.  I use Winchester mostly, but have to use Federal for a couple of my competition guns.   Federal will go off with a lighter strike.  I only use Federal when I have to.

I've used Winchester, Federal and CCI.  No problems with any of them.

CCI  seem to be harder in the old days you would never use cci in a star. The Federal are the best for light trigger target guns. But Winchester are just fine too. Keep your star clean and do not try to go to fast and you will make great amo good luck and have fun       Pat  from   Kalifornia

I also have had good exp w/ Win & Fed. CCI's have given me trouble in large pistol. They have been just large enough in dia to feed stubbornly thru 2 of my 3 feed tubes. With the 3rd they drop but not 100%.

In the past they were also of inconsistent height (thickness?) & I used small washers to raise the feed mech to allow clearance. I have only used them due to necessity. For many yrs the old timers warned against using CCI's in progressive loaders.

Al that being said CCI small primers have been OK in my machines.
