And,,,  anodizing is done in a sulfuric acid bath.  The oxide coating is initially very porous.  When it is in this state it can absorb dies such as the red and gold of some Star powder magazines, but also black and many other colors.  The final step is a hot water bath that seals the oxide coating and makes it hard and corrosion resistant.

Great story Dave,  Thanks.

Does anyone have a picture of Star Machine Works,  inside or out?   I have never seen one.

I agree, I got rid of all of my Freeloaders a long time ago and change all of my machines over to using Lee case feeders.

The picture shows how I attach them to the reloader.

You need a Melamine cereal or noodle bowl.  Search eBay for Melamine Bowl and look for one that is 6-8" in diameter.
You need a polypropylene funnel of the appropriate size,
You need steel washer with a hole that is big enough to fit over a piece of Hulme case feeder tube,
You need some silicone sealant to glue the washer to the bottom of the cereal bowl and the cereal bowl to the funnel.

Oh, and the piece that secures it to the link is a plastic plumbing T.  Not sure if it is PVC or what, but you will find it at Home Depot.

I think you could easily use the 200 grain LSWC data for the LRNFP bullet.  The important criteria is the bullet weight and the material (ie lead).   Personally I would go with 4.0 grains of Bullseye.    I'm sure you know that XD's do not like LSWC.

A friend of mine has used one of my Stars to load lots of 225 grain Lyman 452630 round nose bullets for his XD with great results.  Unfortunately I can't remember the load for the 225 grain bullet, but I think it was 3.5-3.8 grains of Bullseye.   It might be counter intuitive, but for a lighter bullet you need more powder.

Stars Want to Sell/Want to Buy / Re: H&G MOULD HANDLES
« on: February 14, 2011, 09:24:19 am »
Actually, I may be able to help you out myself.

The slot where the mold handles attach varies depending on the vintage of the mold.   Early H&G molds have a slot that is ~1/4" wide.  Later H&G mods have a slot that is ~5/16" wide.

I have a late model 4 Cavity H&G 68BB from Murphy Oregon that has the early handles, and I have never liked the way the mold flopped around on the handles.   I just call Ballisti-cast and ordered a new set of handles ($54) to fit my mold, so I now have an extra set of handles.   If you can use them, I'd be happy to sell them.   These handles are .253" thick where they attach to the mold.

Ballisticast bought the cherries and designs from H&G.  The handles they make are the same as those offered by H&G.  Other than that keep watching eBay.

Be aware that there are some differences between early and late H&G handles.  Later ones tend to be thicker and may not fit early molds.

You may need to have the end of the 44 Magnum sizing die turned down so that it will fit the recess in the shell plate.

Try Ballisti-Cast.   They closed their doors to move but said they are still accepting orders for parts and supplies.  Maybe you can get a set of handles.

Thanks Alan,

I'm sure I must have seen that when it was posted, but had long since forgotten it.
