Not to worry, I have plenty of tool heads, both reconditioned and new, so I don't think I will need to cast and machine any new ones.  However, I do have Star's jigs and fixtures for machining them.

I believe the molds for the tool heads and crank shaft bearings were sent to a foundry in Tijuana which had a sales office in San Diego.   I got in contact with the company and they did locate the pattern (mold) for the crankshaft bearing, but have not found the pattern for the tool head yet.   Although I'd like to have it, I can't see needing it anytime soon.  I have lots of tool heads new and old, and it's more cost effective to recondition a used tool head than cast and machine a new one.

I have an older Star .38 spl (NOT a Universal tool) which I would like to convert to 9mm.  Do you have or make all the parts I would need for that?  I also have a relatively new  Universal tool- would you know where I can get a complete conversion to 9mm for it if the older tool would not work out?

The Redding Profile Crimp die is a Roll Crimp Die, and it is the better choice for 44 Magnum.

From Redding:

"These handgun cartridge crimp dies were designed for those who want the best possible crimp. Profile crimp dies provide a tighter, more uniform roll type crimp, and requires the bullet to be seated to the correct depth in a previous  operation.  These dies are not for cartridges that headspace on the case mouth. "


I have extra 44 Seating dies also.

The Taper Crimp die works well for light loads.

For heavy loads consider buying a second seating die to use for roll crimping at the last station.

I have a 44 Taper Crimp Die in stock.   I also have a beautiful Redding Profile Crimp die with the Star 11/16-24 thread.

1/2" or 5/8"?  depends on your charge, but you can probably get by with 1/2" for 44 Special.  For 44 Magnum I would definitely go 5/8" unless you plan to shoot powder puff loads.

Setting up a new to me machine in .44mag. It came with .44 special dies so I should be close to what I need?
Can I use a 1/2" powder slide or should I plan on getting a 5/8".
Any other problems I might run into?
The hole for the taper crimp is the star threaded type.

Yes, you can load .357 on a Progressive.   

You will probably need a Magnum length Expander (shorter).  The 38 Special Expander will probably interfere with the powder slide when raised enough to load .357 Magnum.  Depends on the machine.

If you will be loading full Magnum loads, you will want a 1/2" powder slide and either a set of spacers or a 1/2" powder slide housing.

If you have a case feeder, you will want an M3A top plate for the Magnum length cases.

You may want a different seating stem for you seating die depending on the bullet.

PS  The powder slides I offer use interchangeable bushings, so I can do pretty much any charge you like.

They fit as shown in the third picture, but the rifle machine and 223 pistol machine use a Rifle tool head which differs in several ways from a standard tool head.

The reference marks on the adjustable powder bars are a handy addition.
Where do the parts above the charge bars in pic #2 fit on the machines?

The Dillon SuperStar conversion kit for loading .223 on a Star Universal included a 5/8" adjustable powder slide.   I have a Super Star Kit and have used it to drop 22-25 grain charges for .223.

Star Rifle and Star .223 Pistol machines have a totally different powder charging system.

The Nominal measurements for Star powder slides is as follows:

All powder slides have a nominal width of 5/8" and a nominal length of 4 1/2"

"0"  Powder Slides are 1/4" thick

"00" Powder Slides are 5/16" thick

1/2" Powder Slides are 1/2" thick

5/8" Powder Slides are 5/8" thick

Star never used the terms 000 and 0000 so far as I have seen.  Those are terms that Rich Daniels used for the 1/2" and 5/8" powder slides respectively.

The very earliest Star reloaders used a  powder slide that was smaller than a "0" powder slide.

The shell plates are not Star, not sure who manufactured them, but I'm thinking maybe they are from a Dillon 1050.   Star shell plates only have six holes and six shell openings.
