Stars Want to Sell/Want to Buy / Re: Hulme top plate
« on: July 31, 2011, 06:00:40 pm »
I am currently making a run of Hulme top plates.   I will initially be making the standard M3 (for 45 ACP, 40 S&W, 38 Super and 38 special) the M3A for 41 magnum, 44 magnum and 45 Long Colt as well as top plates for 9MM and .380.

Eventually I will get around to making a copy of the Dillon Top Plate for loading .223 and 30 Carbine.

Star Reloaders / Re: .30 M1 Carbine seater die question
« on: July 18, 2011, 01:20:58 pm »
Didn't know that.   Although I have a Star tool head set up for 30 Carbine, I have never actually used it.....30 Carbines being illegal in New Jersey.   I have always wanted one, so one of these days when I move out of this state I will be ready to start reloading 30 Carbine.

I have loaded lots of 9mm using a Lifetyme carbide die and have not used any case lubricant.  Maybe I should.

Is it a Lifetyme Sizing die.   If so, than it is a carbide sizing die and case lubricant shouldn't be necessary.  If it is not a Lifetyme (or RLS Precision), than it is probably not a carbide die, and case lubricant is required.

Loading Data & Reloading Procedures / Re: Setting the taper crimper
« on: July 16, 2011, 08:26:54 am »
A lot of folks adjust the taper crimp to achieve a certain dimension at the case mouth,   I taper crimp to .469" at the case mouth (with a bullet inserted).  Others crimp a little more or a little less.

Personally I wouldn't worry about a ring on the bullet.  The lead core of a jacketed bullet is very soft.

Star Reloaders / Re: rare
« on: July 11, 2011, 04:36:10 pm »
Probably the most rare of the (desirable) Star dies would be 40 S&W.   This cartridge came out in 1988, and Star closed their doors sometime in 1993.   I have never seen an actual Star/Lifetyme set though I seem to recall that another member said they had one.

I have talked to people who said they had Star dies in 32-20 and 475 Wildey, but those might be one of a kinds.   I have a set in 32 ACP, and that's pretty rare.

38 Super is not all that uncommon, though most sets are labled 38 ACP.   Same dimensions, just a different loading.

Of course these days, you can probably get any caliber you want from Dave Wilson.   Dave made a 25 ACP sizing die for me to complete a die set I had acquired elsewhere, but was lacking the sizing die.  I still need to make a "0" powder slide that throws 1 grain of Bullseye, then I will be able to start loading those little things.

Star Lubricator & Resizers / Re: Broke a Star!
« on: July 03, 2011, 12:09:24 pm »
Back a few years ago when I did this repair on a couple of Star sizes I talked to Star and they said it wouldn't be worth it to me to have them to repair them.   Of course Star sizers have gone up in price quite a lot since then, so It's worth a phone call.

If you want to get rid of it, I'm sure we can work out something.

I have replaced that part on several Stars.  I was able to get the part from Magma.  Don't know if Magma has changed their policy, but I had no problem getting the part.

The repair is very difficult.  The castings are pressed on.  Difficult to get off,  difficult to get on.

Star Reloaders / Re: IMPROPER LISTING OF A STAR

I wouldn't assume it was intentional.  Could well be an honest mistake.
I have done business with this seller in the past and he has been good to deal with.

Absolutely Correct.   A very late model Star tool head on a Phelps Universal.

That's standard for a unit with a taper crimp die.

Some of the screws on a Star are true Fillister head screws.   These are available through McMaster Carr in boxes of 100, but very reasonably priced.  These include the screws that hold the shell locator straps, the screws used to secure the powder slide cam to the aluminum base, and although not Star, the screws used on the Hulme Case feeder Cam.

Others screws were most likely machined by Star, or custom made for Star.   Although they sort of look like Cheese Head Screws, there is an important difference.   True "Cheese Head" screws have a metric thread.   If you do a Google for "Cheese Head" screws, all you will find is metric threads.   I have searched high and low duplicates of those Star screws and have not found anything close.
