Like he said, the opposite  (we were posting at the same time)

If it has Shell Locator Straps it's a Universal and can be used for multiple calibers.   If it does not have shell locator straps it's a Progressive and can only be used for 38 Special and .357 Magnum.

Adding some pictures for new users who really don't know what Shell Locator Straps are.

The most visible difference is the absence of #79U Shell Locator Straps on Progressives.  One of the least noticeable, but most significant differences is the diameter of the Steel Base.  The diameter of the Progressives steel base is 4" and is too small to accommodate shell plates used for most calibers.

I have one 45 Auto Rim shell plate that is blued.  It looks to be original Star, but I have no idea if the bluing was done by Star, or at a later time.

The Dillon 223 SuperStar shell plates were blued.

+1 for removing the tool head to change the powder slide or powder bushings.

All of the Hoyer's that have crossed my path have all been aluminum not steel.  They have also been marked Hoyer.

I don't think Star started to factory drill and tap for the Hulme case feeder until about 1959.  Hulme offered a kit to enable owners of older machines to properly locate, drill and tap the base for the case feeder.

The case feeder on the Pat. Pending machine is obviously a later addition.

Not sure when Hulme case feeders appeared on the market.  I assume in the 50"s.  Anyone know?

Not sure what you have into the machine, but from what I can see you are missing the handle, primer magazine and follower, and the powder magazine, so about $160 worth of parts.   It's a Progressive model for 38 Special or .357 only, but it has a case feeder which is plus.   If complete with the additional parts, I think you are looking at $300-$350.

It is a nice very early Progressive dating back to the Mid 30's.  It has a "0" size powder slide housing, but it's not marked "No 0", so it predates the "00" powder slide housing.   In it's original state it would have had a nickel plated brass powder magazine and a handle with a brass feral.  The very earliest Progressives from the early thirties actually had a brass/bronze powder slide housing and a powder slide that was even smaller than the "0".

Did you ever hear back from Ken Neeld at ARTCA?  I know he is looking for a Pat. Pending machine for their archive.

Star Lubricator & Resizers / Not a Star

In case any of you are watching, or possibly bidding on the "Star Luber and Sizer" currently on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/152704133662...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

It is not a Star, it is a Phelps. Not to say it isn't a good Lubesizer, but it's not a Star, and other than the dies and punches, parts are not interchangeable with a Star. I told the seller, but apparently he didn't care.

No, they are cast as a single piece.

I sent My(2)Cents an email with some things to look at, but for the benefit of the forum, I'll repeat some of it here.

I have never seen a primer go in upside down on a Star, but I could see how it could happen if the primer magazine was not fully seated in the primer magazine socket.   The bottom of the primer magazine should be nearly flush with the bottom of the primer magazine socket.

The instance where a primer is not loaded is generally caused by a dirty primer magazine or primer slide, or a burr or some sort of damage at the bottom of the primer magazine.   You should be able to drop a primer in to a primer magazine and have it drop all the way through without any resistance.

I agree with Ken, it's a commercial product.  I have a box full of them.   You generally see them on Phelps and earlier Star's like the one in the eBay listing.   They don't seem to fit as well on later model Stars.   There is a Clockwork type spring under the big pulley and it's very susceptible to breakage.  Replacements are hard to come by.

The machine in the eBay listing is a Star Progressive, but has several of Phelps parts.
