Loading Data & Reloading Procedures / Re: Loading Hi-Tek coated bullets
« on: December 30, 2020, 09:04:40 pm »
I believe that somewhere in the Star literature it mentions mounting the reloader rotated counter-clockwise a bit so you can reach around an place the bullet a little easier.  My machines are mounted so the bronze primer assembly is at about 3:15 O'Clock.  This also gives me a little better leverage on the standard Star crankshaft handle.   Might not work so well if you are using a roller handle.

Star Reloaders / Re: Detent Ball - How much spring tension?
« on: December 30, 2020, 08:58:56 pm »
That's unusual, but as I said it wouldn't hurt anything if you didn't screw it in that far.

Thanks for the info.
FWIW, this Universal circa 1979, when the plug is screwed in until it stops (0 torque), the top of the plug is about 1/4" below the steel base bottom. (NOT proud ["UNPROUD"], recessed in the hole]

As Dave says, just screw it in until it binds or stops.   On most machines the brass plug when screwed in as far as it goes, will sit proud of the steel base.  It won't hurt anything if you don't screw it in that far.  You don't need much tension on the spring.   Just keep the hole clean so the ball travels freely.   Be careful not to scratch up the sides of the hole.

Star Reloaders / Re: Changing a 45acp to 45LC
« on: December 28, 2020, 12:53:12 pm »
My personal 45 Colt setup includes a Lifetyme die where the "ACP" is over-stamped with "Colt".   I think it was done at the factory.    Maybe when they did the QC check on the size of the carbide ring they found it was oversized for 45 ACP. ??

No, not carbide, but most bottleneck rifle dies are not carbide and even those that are still recommend (require) using case lube.  I'm pretty sure that Dillon had RCBS make the dies for the Super Star Kit.

Green Frog,

It's definitely for a Universal,   Part of the kit is a couple special shell locator straps.

NYKenn,

No idea but I'm thinking late 70's, or very early 80's.   Here is a link to Dillon's about page.   https://www.dillonprecision.com/about-us.html

Don't know if it's still there, but on the about page of Dillon's website (while Mike was still alive) it said he sold about 100 of the kits.    Some of the parts, like the powder magazine and powder slide were were available separately.    I accumulated five of the kits, but the first one took me forever, getting pieces here and there.

Star Reloaders / Re: New member, with a newly-acquired Star

Actually,  I have sold a number of rebuilt machines to customers in Australia and parts to others.  We have a number of members on the forum from down under.   Outside of the USA, I see the most Stars in Australia and in the Scandinavian countries.

Florey55,

Send me an email to the address on the card below and I will send you a quote for the parts I see missing on your machine.    Please include your shipping address.

I still sell them, but the brass version is out of stock.  Hope to make more this winter.   The aluminum version is in stock.

Star Reloaders / Re: Taper crimp die post end type
« on: October 23, 2020, 01:28:42 pm »
In older tool heads, there is a 3/8" hole in the tool head at the taper crimp station.....which is the station where you remove the finished round.   On newer tool heads, the 3/8" hole is replaced with an 11/16"-24 threaded hole for a threaded taper crimp die.

According to the attached letter from the American Rifleman,  John Giles invented it, and it was manufactured by Heatbath Corp.   Star made their own version.

I noticed that you have it simultaneously listed on GunBroker.com

Star Reloaders / Re: Hulme case feeder dimensions
« on: October 15, 2020, 08:24:21 pm »
You probably have an older model Hulme.   The hole in the top should be 9/16", and later models have a T-Slot in the bottom that is 5/8" wide (a bit narrower on transition models).   If your case feeder doesn't have the T Slot, you won't be able to use if for anything bigger than 41 Magnum.
