Star Reloaders / Re: Hard down stroke?
« on: August 28, 2011, 03:39:54 pm »
There are a number of things that can contribute to need to use excessive force to cycle a Star, and they can all be additive.   The first thing to do is to check for any binding when the machine has no rounds in it.   You should only be able to feel the force of the spring until you get to the last bit of travel when you will also feel the force of the primer punch spring.   If you feel any binding, you need to find out where it is and fix it.   Common areas are the dowel pin, and the primer mechanism.

After you are sure that there is no binding with no ammo in the machine, then checking each station by itself.

Also, if you are using new brass, it can be a lot harder to size the first time.   I find new Star Line brass very hard to size the first time, but after the first time, no problem.

Star Reloaders / Re: Hulme M3 top plate-switching around

You got it.   The M3 top plate is for 38 special and 45 ACP, and cases of similar length like 38 Super.  The end with no recess is for 45 ACP, 38 Super etc.

I can make a new lid for you.   They are $25.

I don't do shut off valves at this time, though I have a design I have considered making.   However, maurilew makes a very nice Powder drain that obviates the need for a powder shut off.

Every Star that has passed through my hands, Every tool head that has passed through my hands, and almost every Star I have seen on eBay, including Lubesizers has had the "common" decal pictured below.   I have seen maybe three very late model Stars with the Late Model aluminized sticker.   I think it was used towards the very end of production.   As I said above, I had not seen the yellow decal until now.

Anyone ever see a Star decal like this one?   The original owner, a Bullseye 2650 shooter said he bought it new from Star in 1966 or 1967.
It's the only one like it that I have come accross.

Stars Want to Sell/Want to Buy / Rebuilt Powder Magazines
« on: August 15, 2011, 01:38:18 pm »
Just a Reminder, I rebuild Powder magazines.   Send your old plastic or aluminum powder magazines to me and I will machine a new 12" polycarbonate tube to fit your hardware.   $25 plus return shipping.    Don't forget to include the lid!  If you don't have a lid, I have those for $20.

I also have complete new powder magazines for $85.

I have a few Brewster Powder Magazines available that feature an integral powder shut off.  These have been rebuilt with a new tube.   $50 each.

I have never tried to separate a steel base from the column.  How would you go about getting them apart.   I assume it would require a hydraulic press?

Also, the position of the shaft keyway relative to the base is critical.   How do you go about making certain it's put back together correctly.
I know that some shaft/base combos are drilled for a pin to index the relative positions, but I have seen others that are not.

Star Reloaders / Re: TAP & DRILL SIZE
« on: August 10, 2011, 03:22:31 pm »
Dave is correct about making sure the hole is located correctly.  It should be fully indexed to determine the center of the hole.   Holding the tool head in the proper position during drilling to assure the hole is perpendicular to the flange of the tool head is also important.  You can't just clamp the tool head in a vice and drill away.  I have a jig to hold the tool head and mount it in the milling machine.  Then you have to find the exact center of the 3/8" hole before drilling and tapping.  This is not a job that can be done properly in a drill press.

I use 41/64 even for Steel (Cast Iron?).  According to the book, that yields a 90% thread.

Star Reloaders / Re: Die Question

Only the sizing/decapping die would be carbide.  If it says Lifetime or RLS Precision on the die it has a carbide sizing ring insert.  If it is not one of those makes, it probably is not carbide, but it might be.  You just have to look for the carbide ring insert, which should be visible.

TZZ is Israeli Military.   Pretty good stuff.

As far as I know, Star did not make any Carbide Sizing Dies.   The two most common manufactures of carbide sizing dies for the Star are Lifetyme, and RLS Perfection (Robert L. Shockley?).   Phelps actually made their own carbide sizing dies.  They are marked Phelps.

Primer explosions are rare, but when they do happen, every primer in the magazine goes off.   Can you imagine 1000 primers going off right in front of your face?  That's one accessory I don't need!
